A Denver laboratory providing a full range of analytical services to the mountain-west and midwest.
Our Denver laboratory was our first effort west of the Mississippi, and vital to have a presence in the western half of the United States. The Denver lab is located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, right between two major highways (6th St, and Interstate 70), and allows for clients to come down out of the mountains right to our location, as well as service the city of Denver. With a drop box located behind our building, it allows clients the ability to drop off samples at any time.
This location provides our full range of analytical services to support indoor air quality, healthcare, and commercial industries. Specific analysis includes viable cultures for bacteria/fungi, non-viable spore traps, tape/swab/bulk direct microscopic analysis, Legionella culture analysis, bulk PLM and PCM air asbestos analysis, Product validation, and utilizes the latest Biolog identification platform.
With accreditations from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), Colorado State Board of Drinking Water, and CDC ELITE Legionella Program, we can handle all your analytical needs.

Meet the Staff
Talena Oliver,BS in GeologyLab Supervisor
Asbestos Lab Supervisor Talena Oliver graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2003 with a BS in Geology, Emphasis in Chemistry. She moved to Denver in 2005 to begin her career in the environmental industry as a polarized light microscopy (PLM) asbestos analyst, combining her love of science with her desire to make a positive impact on those around her. Over 10 years later, she is an accomplished asbestos scientist with experience in PLM, quality management, and departmental organization. Before she joined Aerobiology, Talena worked side-by-side with the Environmental Protection Agency and a large team of contractors on the largest Superfund site in the United States: the Libby Asbestos Superfund Site, located in Libby, Montana. As an individual that acknowledges and understands the bigger picture, she streamlines processes while identifying areas for improvement. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Talena sees what needs to be done and takes action, using her exceptional organization and multi-tasking abilities to juggle many priorities. For the Superfund project, these skills helped ensure that all data related to PLM was consistent, and more importantly, accurate. At the end of the day, making a positive difference is what matters the most to her, and she looks forward to integrating this energy and drive into the Denver laboratory.
Paul KnappeSenior Asbestos Analyst
Paul Knappe has over twenty years of experience analyzing building materials for asbestos in the Denver area. He graduated from Capital University in Bexley, Ohio with a B.A. in Geology. He is the PLM Laboratory Supervisor at the Denver laboratory for Aerobiology. Previously he has worked for Reservoirs Environmental Inc. and DCM Science Laboratory in Denver. Prior to lab work, he worked in exploration geophysics, seismic brokerage, well site geology, mud logging and mining geology.
Erin OrthunMicrobiology Lab Manager
Erin Orthun graduated summa cum laude from Winona State University in Winona, MN in 2003. Erin has a BS in Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. She started her career in Minneapolis, MN in 2003 in the environmental testing industry. She began as a polarized light microscopy (PLM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) asbestos analyst with a nationwide environmental testing company. Erin’s experience expanded to environmental microbiology in 2005 as a spore trap analyst and fungal culture analyst. She was selected by that management team to travel to locations nation-wide to assist in analysis and implementation of corporate and quality assurance procedures. Erin moved to Denver, CO in 2009 after accepting the laboratory management position in the Denver location. Erin was the Technical and Quality Manager for both the microbiology and asbestos departments in Denver until 2013. For the following two years, Erin worked as an Industrial Hygienist conducting indoor air quality inspections at her own company, Metis Environmental. Running her own business and conducting these inspections helped her gain the field perspective many laboratory personnel never get to experience. This has helped her assist clients with unique mold intrusion situations encountered in the field. She briefly worked with the EPA analyzing samples from the Libby Asbestos Superfund Site in Libby, MT. Erin realized her passion was in laboratory management and sought an opportunity that would align her experience and values with an established trusted environmental testing laboratory. Erin started as the Technical and Quality Assurance Manager of the Microbiology department with Aerobiology Laboratory Associates, Inc. in May of 2017 at the Denver, CO location. She is dedicated to creating a positive work environment for the laboratory staff and providing clients with high quality, technically sound results. She is looking forward to being a part of the Aerobiology family and making a positive impact on other employees, and clients alike.
